KPI definitions and reconciling dashboards to the financial statements

A key performance indicator is only useful when it has a written definition, a named source, an owner and a cadence, and when it reconciles to the financial statements where it can. Revenue on a dashboard that does not agree to revenue on the income statement is two numbers for one thing, and the board will find out which is right at the worst time. The set should be short, and each metric should say what it is and where it came from.

Management reporting packages, board packages and investor updates

A management package is the closed month's statements with commentary a non-accountant can read: what happened, why, and what it means for the plan. A board package adds the metrics, the forecast and the decisions being asked for; an investor update is shorter and on the investor's calendar. Each is assembled from the closed books, so a package that goes out before the close is finished will be re-issued when a late entry moves a number somebody already holds.

How to Read These Notes

General information, not advice.

A note is about accounting in general. It is not advice about your situation and it is not an engagement. When a number matters — a filing, a covenant, a sale — put it to a person.

Each note names its source.

Read the standard it cites before you act on it. “Last revised” is the month the note was last written or corrected against that source.

A question these notes do not answer.

The assistant answers accounting questions in plain language. Ask About Reporting to Stakeholders →

A note answers a general question. Your books answer the specific one — the first conversation is a look at them and an honest answer about whether we are the right firm.
